The Internet Setup Assistant in OS 8 offers an easy way to set up your dial-up networking. Follow the steps below:
Open the Assistants folder located on your hard drive and double-click the Internet Setup Assistant icon (alias).
When the Internet Setup Assistant window displays, click on the Update button. Your MSUnet (Pilot) account works as an existing Internet Services Provider (ISP).
The Introduction window displays and lists some of the information required to successfully set up your connection. You will provide the needed information as you complete the remaining steps.
Click the right arrow, displayed at the lower right corner of the window.
Leave Add Internet configuration selected and click on the right arrow.
The Configuration name and connection type window displays.
Note: the Missing or incorrect information window displays if Open Transport PPP is not yet installed. If so, quit the Internet Setup Assistant and install Open Transport PPP. The installer is in the Software Installers folder of the OS 8 CD.
Type a name in the corresponding box (we suggest CySpaceCity). Leave Modem selected under the How will you connect? question.
Click on the right arrow. The Modem settings window displays.
Make the appropriate selections. If your modem is not listed, contact the manufacturer.
Click on the right arrow. The Configuration information window displays.
Click the right arrow. The I.P. address window displays.
There is not an I.P. address assigned to you, so leave No selected. Click the right arrow.
The Domain Name Servers window displays.
Enter the following DNS addresses, on separate lines, in the first box:
198.6.1.2
198.6.1.3
Enter the following Domain Name in the smaller box:
cyspacecity.net
Click the right arrow.
The Email address and password window displays. This information, and information on the remaining windows, is optional.
Click on the right arrow until the Conclusion window displays.
To make your changes, click on the Go Ahead button. If you do not want to connect when finished, uncheck that option.
Note: if you are using both ethernet and dial-up networking, please note that the Assistant automatically switches your TCP/IP connection from ethernet to PPP. Use the connection icon in the control strip, or the the Internet Dialer, found in the Internet folder, or the TCP/IP control panel (File | Configurations) to switch between the connections.
Using dial-up networking
There are several ways to connect once your set up is complete. Most are self-explanatory.
All Macs with Open Transport and Open Transport PPP have the PPP (Remote Access) control panel. Click on the Connect button.
Many Macs, especially those with OS 8.x, have a connection icon in the control strip.
Some Macs have an Internet Dialer icon (alias), found in the Internet folder. Doubleclick the icon, then click on the Connect button.
After several moments, your modem will connect to CySpace City and your computer will establish the dial-up networking connection. Once it is established, you can use applications such as Netscape or Eudora.
